I have seen various versions of these Tea Towel Cakes floating around Pinterest lately and I just thought they were a darling way to give towels as a house warming or wedding gift. With a wedding coming up, I thought this would be a cute take on the diaper cakes I’m always making for baby shower gifts.
I started out by using a round cake board that I had on hand from the diaper cakes. {This would be super cute using a smaller cake board and putting it on a platter}. I hot glued a 6 inch by 13 inch piece of flexible cardboard to the cake board. I used cereal boxes for this and it worked perfectly. I put the hot glue on the bottom of cardboard tube that I made and placed it on the cake board.
I cut another piece of cardboard that was 4 inches by 16 inches. I found it was easier to tape the ends together on each piece. Then put the hot glue on the bottom and slide the shorter circle over the taller circle.
It will look like the pieces are awful close, but it will work out.
I had bought a four pack of kitchen towels from Target, but you could use any towels. You could even use bathroom hand towel and add in wash clothes.
I wrapped the striped towel around the bottom section and used straight pins to attach it.
Then I wrapped the tan colored towel around the top section, tucking it in between the layers of cardboard. I finished it off by pinning the towels together in the back.
Then, I took the other two towels and laid them on top of each other, found the center and stuck them in the top of the cake.
Now you can decorate it anyway you would like. I cut a wide ribbon the width of each layer and hot glued the ribbon in the back. Then I used a smaller ribbon to tie a bow in front on each layer. You could add chip board with initials, names, etc. to make it decorative.
Now get really creative and add whatever kitchen tools the couple is registered for. Or you could create a theme like baking {add wooden spoons, rubber spatulas, whisks, measuring spoons, etc.} or grilling {add various grilling tools}.
So far, I’ve added wooden spoons and rubber spatulas. I’m sure I will find more to add to it when I’m finished shopping.
I would love to receive on of these made out of Rachel Ray’s line, displaced on top of one of her serving platters! How stinkin’ cute would that be?!
I got the original idea for this project from here & here.
